How we check what we publish, and what we have corrected
A directory is only as good as its phone numbers. Most get worse every month. Here is how we try not to, and the record of where we got it wrong.
Listings
- Verified from the source. Each detail is confirmed from the provider’s own site, a state or federal register, or a call. Information from paid-membership guides is never copied; at most it tells us an organisation exists, and we check it ourselves.
- Dated. Every listing shows the exact day it was last checked.
- Re-checked on a cycle. Home care, transport, assisted living, adult day and Councils on Aging every 90 days; everything else at least every 12 months. The professional standard for resource directories asks only for yearly checks.
- Official data where it exists. Nursing homes, home health agencies and hospices carry Medicare’s ratings, refreshed monthly.
- Levels of care checked against the state. Assisted living against the state’s certified register; nursing homes and rest homes against their licences.
Guides
- Every figure comes from a page we opened, and every guide lists its sources and the date its facts were checked.
- Figures that change every year (Medicare costs, tax-credit limits) are re-checked when the new ones are published.
- Guides are general information, not legal, medical, tax or financial advice, and say so.
- When a local professional reviews a guide, their name will appear on it with their permission.
