Who handles fuel assistance on Cape Cod, and when should I apply?
Short answer: On the Cape, the state fuel assistance programme is run by South Shore Community Action Council (1-877-383-5243). It helps pay for heat used from November 1 to April 30, and applying is free. Apply in the autumn, before the cold.
The Massachusetts Home Energy Assistance Program (often called fuel assistance or LIHEAP) helps pay for oil, gas, electric, propane, kerosene, wood or coal heat used between November 1 and April 30. Eligibility is based on household income. Applying is free.
On Cape Cod, applications go through South Shore Community Action Council: call 1-877-383-5243. You can also apply online through the state portal, and your Council on Aging will help you fill in the forms.
If you fall behind on a gas or electric bill, you are also protected from heat-related shut-offs from November 15 to March 15 if you have a financial hardship, and households where everyone is 65 or older need state permission before any shut-off at any time of year.
